Is mental peace being elusive today?

Is mental peace difficult to gain?

Mental peace is a widely known term for denoting a person’s peaceful being. When someone remains happy and consistent in life and can move towards the path of self-actualisation then we can assume that person is at peace. International organisations are also aiming for peace and using doves or other symbols for it. Peace is a coveted thing that everyone desires for. However, the desirability of peace is very elusive. Religions and philosophies hardly get successful in providing a very peaceful life. It is very easy to find a chaotic religious person or a person engaged with problems that emerge from an existential crisis. Thus, the question arises here is this peace an elusive thing? Why is this so rare to get? What are the strategies that we should apply to have a peaceful and happy life? This blog shall deal with the fundamentals of peace.

Levels of peace

There are three levels of peace that we can classify. First, we can refer to inner peace. Bhagwat Gita mentions the concept of Sthit Pragya. This refers to a stoic condition where a person always lives in a peaceful condition irrespective of the events of the external environment.

The second level we can include is the peace of our family and environment. Psychology accepts the fact that our environment itself has a significant impact on our behaviour. Thus, our mental peace can also be affected by our immediate environment. A toxic environment will lead to release of toxins in the body itself and vice versa

The third level is international peace. If a smaller number of nations are engaged in the warfare the cumulative peace can be significantly affected. For instance, the citizens of Ukraine can’t be considered in a peaceful situation as war has significant ramifications on an individual.

Characteristics of a peaceful person

A peaceful person has certain distinct characteristics that help him to be in the state. These can include:

  1. Responsiveness rather than reaction: – A logical response rather than providing the reaction can prevent us from creating chaos. Thus, a peaceful person always tries to provide a response rather than a reaction. Feeling angry is okay but yelling can affect you. Thus, those who are in a game of hide and seek with peace must try to practice responsiveness
  2. A healthy body: – The obsolete but applicable proverb mentions that a healthy mind stays in a healthy body. Being physically fit can help us to find our inner peace. Physical fitness tends to maintain the hormonic balance of our body. Hormones such as serotonin and endorphins require an appropriate amount of secretion to have a peaceful and happy mind. Thus, peaceful persons tend to have a happy mind
  3. Practice of emotional intelligence: A person who knows how to identify and manage their emotions effectively is the one who can have a peaceful environment. Moray mentions that there are four pillars of emotional intelligence. It includes Perception, facilitating thoughts with emotions, Identifying emotions and emotional management. This helps in the proper regulation of our emotions.
  4. Have all east one healthy relationship: – keeping the environment healthy is one medium which can be achieved by having unconditional relations. Unconditional relations refer to the kind of relations where one deserves love without any condition to get it. It is a detrimental factor in having mental peace.

Strategies to have mental peace

  1. Daily physical activity: – A study proves that physical activity leads to the generation of endorphins in our body which is a ‘feel good’ hormone. Thus, mental peace is significantly related to our daily physical activity. WHO mentions that you must spend 2 hours minimum in a day for physical activities to have a healthy body and healthy mind.
  2. Meditation: – Sightfulness to our thoughts helps us to get rid of our attachment to them. It tends to modify our self-concept, thus extracting us from the chaos of crowds. This is a unanimous thought process of the majority of religions that recommends
  3. Relationship management: – A true relationship is required to be nurtured. One who is emotionally intelligent enough to maturely manage close relations can find mental peace inside. Healthy relations will form a healthy environment and a healthy environment will form a healthy mind. Thus, please do maintain your relationship.
  4. A solution-oriented approach:- If you try to find the solutions to the problems of your life you will find a very optimistic pathway. Rather than highlighting the problem, please try to highlight the possible solutions for it. Attempting it can get rid of it. Not having an attempt will leave you in the same situations

Thus, in a nutshell, we shall conclude that although mental peace is difficult to gain in today’s era, it is not something impossible. A series of strategies that we can apply to our daily life which can prove fruitful for us.
