Four-Year Degree Holders Now Eligible for PhD and NET 2024 : Registration commenced

In a significant move aimed at enhancing educational opportunities and promoting research culture in the country, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that students holding four-year undergraduate degrees will now be eligible to pursue Ph.D programs and appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET).

UGC Chairman Jagadesh Kumar announced that students with 4-year undergraduate degrees can now take the National Eligibility Test (NET) directly, simplifying access to higher education.Candidates with 75% aggregate marks or equivalent grades can now pursue a PhD directly, expanding academic opportunities. This change represents a notable shift in eligibility criteria, offering more avenues for qualified individuals.

It is also need to inform interested candidates that the NTA has opened online registration for UGC NET June 2024 until May 10, 2024, accessible via ugcnet.nta.ac.in. Exam fee submission is from May 11-12, with a correction window available from May 13-15. The exam is set for June 16, 2024, covering JRF, Assistant Professor eligibility, and PhD program admissions in 83 subjects.The exam comprises two papers, both consisting of objective-type multiple-choice questions. There will be no intervals between the papers.

End of Traditional Eligibility Criteria

The decision marks a departure from the previous eligibility criteria, which mandated a postgraduate degree for admission to Ph.D programs and eligibility for NET. With this revision, students completing four-year undergraduate programs, such as Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) Honors, among others, will now have the opportunity to directly enroll in Ph.D. programs.

Additionally, these students will be eligible to appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET), a competitive examination conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for determining the eligibility for Assistant Professorship and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) in Indian Universities and colleges.
