‘India is shifting from burden of school bags to boon of learning’ ~ PM Narendra Modi
On Wednesday, July 29 the Union Cabinet approved the New Education Policy that aims to reform the three decades old country’s education system. The NEP 2020 aims to make “India a global knowledge superpower”.
The key changes made by NEP-
- The 10+2 school system has been replaced by 5+3+3+4 structure.
- Exams will be held only for classes 3, 5 and 8.
- Mother tongue/regional language will be the medium of teaching in schools upto class 5.
- Undergraduate degree will be of either 3 or 4 year duration with multiple exit options within the period.
- Higher Education Commission of India will be set up as a single body for entire higher education, excluding medical and legal education.
- National Research Foundation to be created to foster strong research culture.
- HRD Ministry has also been renamed Ministry Of Education.
- No rigid separations between arts, science and commerce. Students can select subjects of their liking across the streams.
- Vocational education will start from 6th grade and will include internships.
- Board examination to test core concepts and application of knowledge.
